Year 10

The Curriculum at Year 10 is made up of 14 Core and Elective subjects.

Year 10 students study a core consisting of:

Religious Education x 2 Units

Year 10 Religious Education, which is undertaken by all Year 10 students, consists of two Units, one of which is Texts and Traditions Unit 1 which is a VCE study.

English x 2 Units

All Year 10 students undertake the two Units of Year 10 English.

Mathematics x 2 Units (from a range of pathways)

All students undertake two Units of Year 10 Mathematics, with some students being invited to study Accelerated Mathematics and some students invited to study Modified Mathematics. All other students will study Year 10 Mathematics in the first semester.

In semester two students in the Accelerated class and the Modified class will continue in their programs. Students in the Year 10 Mathematics classes will be enrolled in either the Mathematical Methods stream or the General Mathematics stream.

Science x 2 Units (two pathways)

All Year 10 students study Science 1 in the first semester. In the second semester most students study Science 2A. Based on results and future pathways, some students are invited to study Science 2B. VCE Science subjects are not available to students who undertake Science 2B.

Year 10 students study 6 other Units ONE of which must be a Humanities Unit (14 units in total).

Choosing Electives

  1. Students must select at least ONE Humanities Units.
  2. Students selecting Language subjects (German, Indonesian or Italian) must undertake the subject for both semesters in addition to having studied the subject for both semesters in Year 9.
  3. Students selecting a VCE subject must select both Units.
  4. Students may undertake no more than Four Elective Units from the one Learning Area.
  5. Normally, Students may undertake only ONE VCE study during Year 10. Except in special circumstances students will be permitted to undertake only ONE VCE Unit 3 and 4 subject in Year 11.

Availability of VCE Units

Subject to the conditions outlined above, students will be given the opportunity to undertake ONE VCE study during Year 10. This will be undertaken throughout Semesters One and Two, and represents two elective choices. This presents students with an opportunity to experience the learning conditions which apply to VCE studies, and also provides an opportunity for very successful students to undertake Units 3 and 4 studies whilst in Year 11. Should students be permitted to undertake a Unit 3 and 4 sequence in Year 11 they must still undertake 5 subjects plus Religion in Year 12.

To qualify for any of the VCE subjects on offer in Year 10 a student must have:

  • averaged a score of 70 or better, in core and elective subjects in Semester 1 of Year 9. These scores need to be maintained in Semester 2 in order to confirm the selection.
  • demonstrated capacity for high academic achievement.
  • strong teacher and Learning Area Leader recommendation.
  • achieved a score of 65 or better in English.

Undertaking Unit 3 & 4 Studies in Year 11

Students who successfully complete a VCE Subject in Year 10 will be given an opportunity to undertake Units 3 and 4 in that subject in Year 11.

A student wishing to be selected for any of the Unit 3 and 4 VCE subjects on offer during Year 11 must have:

  • satisfactorily completed core and elective subjects in Year 10.
  • scored 65 in both VCE Units at Year 10.
  • strong teacher and Learning Area Leader recommendation.
  • achieved a score of 65 or better in English.

Note: Students will normally be permitted to undertake only one Unit 3 and 4 sequence in Year 11. Should students be permitted to undertake a Unit 3 and 4 sequence in Year 11 they must still undertake 5 subjects plus Religion in Year 12.

Year 10 Work Experience

During Year 10 all students participate in a compulsory work experience placement.

Students are responsible for finding their own places and negotiating possibilities with employers, however, the College makes some bookings and the Careers Counsellor assists students. Where a student is unable to arrange a placement, the Careers Counsellor from the College will assist students to find an appropriate place.
