Mobile Phone Policy Changes

We are taking this opportunity to communicate an important change to our school’s mobile phone policy. Effective from the start of Term 2, students will no longer be permitted to use mobile phones during the school day, from 8.40am – 3.15pm or during out-of-hours school events. This means students will be required to turn off their mobile phones and store them securely in their lockers during the school day.

Whilst this may be a significant change for many of our families with senior students, we strongly believe that this is in the best interest of our students’ academic and social wellbeing. Research has shown that mobile phones can be a significant distraction in the classroom, and they negatively impact social interactions among students, especially during recess and lunchtime.

By implementing this policy change, we hope to create a more focused and engaged learning environment, where students can fully participate in classroom activities and interact more meaningfully with peers. We also believe that it will help minimise distractions during important educational activities such as presentations and assessments.

Assemblies were held with students in years 10, 11 and 12 during the last week of Term 1 to explain the change, the research and the intention leading to the decision. We welcome continued conversations at home about the impact mobile phones have on their learning, both at school and at home, as well as their social and mental wellbeing and the importance of building strong habits at this time in their lives.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to create the best possible learning environment for our students.
