Why Emmaus

Welcome to Emmaus College

Emmaus College is one of Melbourne's leading coeducational schools in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, offering a seamless education across the spectrum from the very youngest child entering our Kindergarten Program at the age of three through to our graduates in Year 12.  By implication, then, we are a family school, and I warmly welcome you to our website to learn a little more about our wonderful school community. Our website acts as a window into our dynamic learning environment, but it may not capture the true essence of who we are as a supportive and happy school community. We are fiercely proud of our Catholic ethos and our values, our students and our staff.

We are a faith-filled, close-knit, engaged, and friendly community that has been educating since 1980. The Catholic values of respect, integrity, faith, community, excellence and service underpin all we do at Emmaus College. We are passionate about learning and have a forward and outward approach to education.

Emmaus College offers a seamless educational experience for our students, from Kindergarten to Year 12. Our students experience an innovative and dynamic learning environment that provides them with a love of learning and the academic and personal skills to flourish in the 21st century. Academic aspiration matters, and it is important that every student is inspired to be the best they can be. Our vision for learning encompasses all aspects of life, the intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, emotional, ethical, and cultural dimensions where education is consciously structured to develop the whole person in a caring, family-oriented community.

Ms Karen Jebb

At Emmaus, we passionately believe that enjoyment of learning and our students’ wellbeing must lie at the heart of our endeavours. Our students, from Prep to Year 12, learn to think independently and develop a spirit of hope that will allow them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Our motto “To know Christ” is central to the lived experience of our students. This ambition is hope-filled and life-giving. With our dedicated staff, parents, and community’s support, our students grow into young adults of integrity who possess a sense of social justice. These are qualities that will see them go out into the world and make a significant contribution towards society.

I look forward to welcoming you and your family to Emmaus College

With every blessing,

Our vision

Our Vision is deeply grounded in Luke’s Gospel (24: 13-35).

Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?  Luke 24: 32

Our School Motto: To Know Christ

College Vision:  To foster a community that nurtures the full flourishing of each learner, inspiring excellence as they come ‘To Know Christ’ on their own road to Emmaus.

College Mission

Emmaus College, as a Christ centred Community, has fundamentally at the heart of its spirituality, the person of Jesus Christ. The story of the Walk to Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke and from which the College is named, nourishes our spirituality. Students are encouraged to live by the key core values of faith, community, respect, excellence, integrity and service and to empower them to achieve their best academically. Emmaus aims to ensure that learners acquire and utilise the knowledge and skills to be future ready. Our mission as a Christ-centred community, provides a caring and supportive environment that enables students to develop their full potential in all areas of life. Pastoral care is a key focus of the College, and promotes and enhances student wellbeing of a personal, social, physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual nature.

Character Development

Student Leadership

Emmaus College has three Student Councils: a Junior School (Prep - Year 6) chaired by our Junior School Captains (Year 6), a Middle School Council (Years 7-9), chaired by the College Vice Captains (Year 11), and a Senior School Council (Years 10-12), chaired by the College Captains (Year 12).

The Junior, Middle and Senior Student Councils meet regularly and are involved in the planning of many school events such as Open Day, Emmaus Day, fundraising ventures, theme day activities, etc. Students in leadership roles also participate in planning House events with their respective House Leaders, and they make themselves available to represent the College as required.

Students also have the opportunity to nominate to be a Captain or member of one of the committees (Liturgy, Arts, Social Justice, Environment, Wellbeing, FIRE Carrier and Academic) or to be considered for a House Captain role, with a male and female Year 6 and Year 12 student filling the House Captain roles for each House.

Student leaders proudly uphold College expectations by example and by the encouragement of other students. They foster a spirit of welcome, cooperation and acceptance in the College community. Student leaders encourage a positive and inspiring culture of learning and a steadfast dedication to academic pursuits. Student leaders encourage all students to participate in the cocurricular life of the College, and they act as a liaison between students and the College Leadership Team to make suggestions on behalf of the student body.

College Crest and Houses

The Emmaus College crest has been very much a part of the history of the College since 1980. The crest features the words, ‘To Know Christ’ which draws inspiration from the Emmaus Story in Luke’s Gospel (Luke 24: 13-35). The cross depicted on the crest is the Jerusalem Cross which dates back to the time of the crusaders. The Jerusalem cross represents Christ’s command to spread the Gospel around the world.
