'The Great Fire' destroys the majority of the Vermont South Campus

There were many challenges with the the merger of two single sex schools into one school but two campuses, with the most unexpected being the infamous fire in January 1981. Just before the start of the school year, fire tore through the upper levels of what is currently the Senior Campus.

Many students were relocated to an empty Jewish school in Wantirna South, where the current Knox College is located. Others were educated in portable classrooms until the upper floor was eventually rebuilt.
