Everyone has an opinion about school uniforms, such as what they like, what they don’t like and how they should be worn. This is why the school sets the uniform policy and expectations, and, upon enrolment, parents and students agree to accept the policy and do so with a commitment to the College. School uniforms have stood the test of time in most schools and Emmaus College has a very smart and well-regarded uniform that uniquely and proudly represents our College. Many students remember the excitement of getting their new uniform as they begin secondary school and this is something we aim to instil in students as they move through the school.
School uniforms continue to be highly regarded because of the number of benefits they bring to a learning environment, most importantly a spirit of unity. When the students wear the uniform well, it enhances the sense of community. School uniform lifts the spirit of the school and plays a key role in promoting pride, self-confidence, and a feeling of belonging within the student body. These factors contribute to students' wellbeing, removing the additional pressures of deciding what to wear and the added stress of meeting the expectations of their peers with the latest fashion trends.
When students are wearing the same uniform, it promotes a feeling of team spirit. Everyone is easily identifiable as being on the same team, just like the players in a sports team. We believe this helps our students understand that they’re a part of something bigger than themselves. Uniforms can break down class barriers, spending more mental energy on learning. Uniforms build community in a school as students of all ages – and alumni – bond over the outfits they all associate with their school days.
School uniforms turn the focus on a person’s character rather than appearance. Providing school uniforms puts the interest of the student first, as well as nullifying potential social anxiety over dress and appearance. When everyone is dressed the same and feels proud to be a part of their school, it boosts morale. The student body has a greater sense of togetherness and pride, boosting school spirit.
Students are expected to wear their full school uniform to school every day. The only exception is when they have a practical PE lesson (approved by the teacher) or represent the College in a sporting competition, they can wear their sports uniform to and from school to save time changing and carrying additional items in their school bag. The sports uniform is not an alternative uniform to the school uniform and should not be worn at any other time.
The summer uniform is compulsory in Terms 1 and 4.
The winter uniform is compulsory in Terms 2 and 3.
Students are only to wear their sports uniform on timetabled PE classes or approved EISM Sports days. The Emmaus College uniform is the main uniform. The sports uniform is for PE and sports only, it is not to be seen as an alternative uniform.
Students are required to have the correct Emmaus College Sports uniform for Physical Education classes and sports, including appropriate headwear during Terms 1 and 4. All inter-school sports teams are required to take to the field/court in the correct uniform for that sport.
Students taking Drama/Dance (Years 9-12) are required to change into their Emmaus College ink tracksuit pants with the rugby top and sports shirt when required for practical activities.
Plain, all-black leather lace-up (must be capable of being polished. Not suede, not boots, no platform heals, not sports shoes, not Doc Martins, etc) school shoes are the prescribed uniform shoe for both boys and girls. Contact the College, prior to purchase, if uncertain about a particular style.
Students must wear the Emmaus College hat during recess and lunch breaks during Terms 1 and 4. No other hat or beanie is to be worn with the College uniform.
The College cap is required for Physical Education and Sport classes during Terms 1 and 4 and may also be mandated for camps and excursions.
