BYOD Policy & Minimum Specifications


BYOD allows students to select the device of their choice. This provides an opportunity for independent and individualised learning. Accessing digital resources assists in developing problem solving skills and encourages students to think creatively when presenting/demonstrating knowledge.

The BYOD program encourages learning to take place at any time. Students and teachers are provided with the opportunity to move towards personalised learning, differentiated teaching strategies and a focus on learning styles and preferences.

Students, parents and teachers need to realise that technology is simply a tool and not an end in itself. As such, devices are used to enhance learning experiences.

Software Provided by the College
The College licensing agreements provides students with the following software;

  • MS Office 365:  The Office Suite can be installed on 5 devices owned by the student.
  • Virus Scanning Software: Trend Micro. Compulsory for all devices on the college LAN.



Wifi Wireless network to allow access to the internet
Wireless Standard 802.11a/n/ac (5GHz) The BYO Device must have a network card of a/n/ac (5GHz) wifi standard in order to connect to the college wifi network.
3G or 4G Third or fourth generation mobile communication technology, connecting to the Internet via an ISP account rather than the college wifi network.
Mobile Hotspots/Tethering A way of connecting from one device to another.

Minimum Specifications

For the optimal learning experience, there is a minimum specifications required for BYOD.

NB: Mobile Phones are not acceptable as a BYOD learning device!

The minimum specifications are;

  • Minimum screen of 9 inches diagonal
  • Full keyboard for easy creation of tasks and note taking.
  • Wifi capabilities 802.11 a, n, ac (5 GHz)
  • CPU: Intel i5U Series: Core i5-7200U, Core i5-8250U
  • 8 GB RAM
  • At least 2 USB ports
  • Software that is compatible with Windows or Apple Operating systems. The chosen software must be compatible with MS Office Products for ease of submission of assessment tasks.
  • At the beginning of Year 10, students should have a device that is less than 1 year old and in good working order.

NB: More detailed specifications will be communicated each calendar year.

Suggested Devices

Different types of devices that could be considered are; (Devices should be less than 3 years old)

Tablet (iPad or Android or Windows ) Minimum screen size 9 inches, 64 GB + capacity with wireless capability. Attachable keyboard and hard cover case. For new devices: 2 year extended warranty recommended
Any laptop (Windows or Mac) With wireless capability and padded carry bag. For new machines: 3 year extended warranty recommended 120 GB + Capacity.
While the above devices represent minimum requirements, it should be noted that the following devices will provide greater versatility and functionality for students.
Laptop PC Video, camera, Internet browser, full keyboard, runs educational applications, mouse control. Laptops take learning to a higher level with their higher performance levels that enable them to run educationally sound applications for music composition, graphics, and so on. The full keyboard also provides students with an easier way to take notes and manage their work.
Slate/Tablet PC with Pen; e.g., Surface Pro 2 Video, camera, Internet browser, full keyboard, digital pen for handwriting input, runs educational applications. Tablet PCs offer the best of all worlds. They’re fully featured for learning, and they have the important extra ability of the digital pen that opens up a whole range of pedagogical opportunities including writing chemical and mathematical formulae as well as Asian language characters. They can also jot notes that can be converted to text.

Detailed Policy Statements For students, Parents & Teachers

Students are expected to:

  • Bring their device to every lesson
  • Have a BYOD that is in good working order.
  • Install a reliable and updated anti-virus program to protect their devices, and the College network from contamination by computer viruses. (NB: Anti -Virus software can block other wifi networks. Please ensure that your anti-virus software is not configured in this way. If unsure, see ITS for clarification.)
  • Be responsible for their devices and their use at all times. Devices must be kept in a secured locker when not in use. The College will not be held responsible for any damage, loss or theft of any student device.
  • Have a password or code, for security reasons, on their BYO device.
  • Be responsible and liable for any damage that they may be cause with their device.
  • Use devices in the classroom at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Classroom teachers may prohibit, restrict or regulate use of devices as they deem necessary.
  • Charge the batteries of their device overnight and bring a fully charged device to School with enough power to last the day. The College has no provisions for students to charge and power their devices. Students are expected to carry paper and pens as backup.
  • Use their device to support the classroom activities and educational aims of the College.
  • Carry their devices in padded bags or hard cover cases when moving between classrooms and to and from school to prevent damage to the device. Registration can be refused if the device is presented without the appropriate bag or cover.
  • Use their devices only for study purposes and in supervised areas such as the Library and Study Areas during these times: before school, during recess, at lunch and after school.
  • In a duty of care capacity, College Staff have the right to inspect the student’s device and its contents.
  • Back up all contents of the BYO Device regularly at home with another storage medium. The college will take no responsibility for any data stored on the BYO Device or loss of data.
  • An option for storage and back up is the student One Drive account (Cloud Storage) provided by Microsoft through our Office 365 Agreement. Students are provided with 1 TB of storage while at the college. Students are encouraged to use this storage facility for ease of access to data files.


Students are NOT permitted to:

  1. play games, access social media or take part in any other activities that are not related to their learning.
  2. use their devices to cause distraction for others, especially in regards to sound. Therefore, audio must be muted at all times or restricted with student owned headphones or earphones when directed by the teacher.
  3. film or record any student or staff member using the camera or microphone in the devices without the express written permission of the College AND the individual concerned.
  4. take photos of themselves or others and upload them on ANY social media websites
  5. use the devices in the school grounds during these times: before school, during recess, at lunch and after school.
  6. avoid the limitations set by the college network, particularly Internet restrictions through mobile network devices, 3G, 4G or beyond connections, or phone hotspots while on College premises.
  7. share passwords or any other access codes with any other person, or use another user’s account to access the computer network.
  8. use the devices for SAC/SAT school based examinations, unless notified otherwise

General Statements

BYO Devices will not have access to the college drive mappings. Students will not be able to use their network H: drives as a back-up method.

Emmaus College network reserves the right to log, monitor and review any internet & email use on the Emmaus wireless network. This logging, monitoring and reviewing may be conducted without cause and without notice and will include monitoring of the student’s BYO device.

The College ITS Staff will assist with any minor technical support. As the college does not hold the warranty on the BYO Device, any faults or issues need to be taken up with the manufacturer or the place of purchase. Parents/Guardians are responsible for any warranty agreements entered into upon purchasing the BYO Device.

Other ICT Policies

The BYO Digital Device policy establishes principles and requirements that govern the use of Digital Devices which are not owned by Emmaus College. The Policy supports Emmaus College minimum network connectivity requirements. This policy is linked to and must be read in conjunction with two other ICT policies that users must adhere to. These policies are;

Misuse CONSEQUENCES (To be read in conjunction with the above two policies)

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary action such as, but not limited to:

  • Loss of access to the network
  • Temporary confiscation of the device
  • A after school detention or
  • Suspension from school
